Islam – A Religion, or a Political-Ideological System That Rejects Coexistence?

אסלאם – דת או אידיאולוגיה

Let’s start with an uncomfortable truth:
this question is usually killed either by lazy Islamophobia or by even lazier apologetics. Both are useless. One demonizes blindly, the other lies politely. Neither explains reality.

So let’s try something radical – intellectual honesty.

The Short Answer (For People With a Short Attention Span)

Islam is both a religion and a political-legal ideology.
Not every Muslim is violent. Not every expression of Islam is violent.
But unlike most modern religions, Islam was never meant to stay out of power.

That’s not an insult. That’s history.

Islam Was Born Ruling – Not Praying Quietly in the Corner

Muhammad was not just a prophet whispering divine wisdom into the desert wind.
He was also:

  • a head of state
  • a military commander
  • a legislator
  • a judge
  • a conqueror

The Quran is not just a book of faith. It is a manual for society:

  • criminal law
  • war ethics
  • governance
  • hierarchy between believers and non-believers

Islam does not merely ask: “How should I live?”
It also asks – and answers – “Who should rule, and under which law?”

That already places it in a different category.

Coexistence – Core Value or Tactical Pause?

This is where things get awkward.

Classical Islamic jurisprudence divides the world into:

  • Dar al-Islam – the domain of Islam
  • Dar al-Harb – the domain of war

Peace with non-Muslims exists, but mostly as:

  • a temporary arrangement
  • a necessity when Muslims are weak
  • a ceasefire, not an ideal

Even the famous “tolerance” toward Jews and Christians (the dhimmi system) was not equality:

  • you may live
  • you may work
  • but you will never rule
  • and you will pay for your inferiority

That’s not genocide – but it’s also not pluralism.

Jihad – Spiritual Metaphor or Military Doctrine?

Modern Western discourse loves to say:
“Jihad just means an inner spiritual struggle.”

That interpretation is new, selective, and convenient.

Classically:

  • jihad is spiritual and military
  • Islamic expansion did not happen via dialogue circles
  • it happened through conquest, taxation, and submission

Empires don’t spread accidentally.
And Islam historically spread like an empire – because it was one.

“But Most Muslims Are Peaceful!”

Yes. And That’s Not the Argument.

Most Muslims:

  • want stability
  • family
  • income
  • normal lives

Just like everyone else.

But here’s the uncomfortable part:
when extremists act, they don’t invent ideas out of thin air.
They quote scripture, jurisprudence, and history.

The problem isn’t Muslims.
The problem is a system where:

  • religion and state are fused
  • law is divine and non-negotiable
  • internal criticism is heresy
  • and sovereignty belongs to God, not citizens

That structure is combustible.
The matchstick changes – the fire doesn’t.

Political Islam Is Not a Western Invention

Hamas, ISIS, the Muslim Brotherhood, Iran –
they are not “misunderstandings.”
They are not “responses to Israel.”
They are not Western propaganda projects.

They are Islamic political theology in action.

When a religion refuses to stay personal and insists on ruling others, conflict is not a bug – it’s a feature.

So What’s the Bottom Line?

  • Islam is not merely a private faith
  • it contains a built-in governing ideology
  • coexistence exists – often as strategy, not principle
  • violence is not mandatory – but it is theologically available

Pretending otherwise does not promote peace.
It promotes denial.

At the same time:
claiming that every Muslim is an enemy is intellectually lazy – and strategically stupid.

The Real Question No One Wants to Ask

Can Islam:

  • abandon its claim to total sovereignty?
  • accept being one belief system among many, not above them?
  • separate God from government?

Until that question is seriously confronted – not in PR campaigns, but in theology – the tension will remain.

Because the issue is not faith.
It’s power.

And religions that refuse to limit their power never coexist peacefully for long.

Uncomfortable?
Good. Reality usually is.
