Israel’s 78th Independence Day
In a country where everyone is sure they are the prime minister – the fact that there is still a country is probably our greatest success.
In a country where everyone is sure they are the prime minister – the fact that there is still a country is probably our greatest success.
If there is one thing that can be said about the people who live in Zion, it is this: they may not have asked for this reality.
But they have certainly learned to live with it… and if they have to live with it – then at least with a little humor.
There are countries where a “news update” means a political scandal, a change in the weather, or an important football match. In Israel, however, a “news update” is often something along the lines of:
“Alarms in the center, interceptions in the north, the public is asked to stay near protected areas.” And that’s it. Life goes on.
It’s not that they are heroes despite what they were taught. They are heroes because of what they were taught — love of country, tradition, responsibility, honor. Values that are considered social shame today in the West, here they are the entry ticket to life itself.
Anyone who has ever sat for an hour and a half in a shelter with 11 residents, two babies, and a small radio that screams “The alarm is over – you can leave” every five minutes – will tell you the truth: The most threatening thing about war is that the mold in the shelter will come out of it with more public presence from the Chief of Staff.
Who are we if not iron swords?
There is something macabre about this name, and there is also a simple truth in it: in every generation, someone rises up against us – and we, with all the hustle and bustle, find a way to continue.
