After we got to know the parties, the politicians, the journalists, and the public – it’s time to talk about the most Israeli phenomenon after hummus and traffic jams on Highway 1: political cyclicality. That eternal time loop in which everything changes – in order to stay exactly the same.
The public is the sovereign, the king, the final arbiter – and also the one who will regret it in three months.
He is cynical but naive, nervous but indifferent, and most importantly – he is never at fault.
The biggest problem with Israeli politics is that we are all, how can we say, a little used to thinking in terms of tribes. There is the “white tribe,” the “second Israel,” the “settlers,” the “leftists,” the “progressives,” the “ultra-Orthodox,” the “national religious,” the “Russians,” the “Arabs,” the “Druze,” and the “kibbutzniks with the open shirts who like to make fun of everyone.”
Welcome to Israel. A country with seven million political commentators and zero stable governments.
