The Israeli “Togetherness” Superpower

הביחד הישראלי

The Country’s Real Superpower, and How the Left Keeps Trying to Break It

גור אריה יהודה

Israel does not run on oil.
It does not run on calm.
It definitely does not run on patience.

What it runs on is togetherness.

Not the TED Talk version.
Not the workshop version with name tags and a feelings circle.
Real Israeli togetherness – loud, improvised, slightly aggressive, and activated only when things go wrong. Which, in Israel, is most days.

It is the instinct that pushes people with nothing in common – politically, culturally, emotionally – to show up anyway. To argue. To curse. And then to stand shoulder to shoulder when it actually matters.

This is not an ideology.
It is a survival mechanism.

And that is exactly why parts of the Israeli Left cannot stand it.

Togetherness That Never Asked for Approval

Israeli togetherness was not approved by an ethics committee.
It does not include a diversity statement.
It does not apologize for existing.

It emerges during wars, terror attacks, power outages, reserve duty call-ups, and random moments at the grocery store when someone forgets their wallet and nobody makes a big deal out of it.

It is rough.
It is emotionally unrefined.
It sometimes says the wrong thing.

But it works.

Which makes it dangerous.

Because in a worldview that demands everything be categorized, labeled, audited, and filtered through moral theory, this kind of raw unity is a problem. It cannot be controlled. It cannot be reprogrammed. It refuses to explain itself.

The Left’s Problem with a Shared Instinct

Officially, the Left supports unity.
Unofficially, it cannot stop interrogating it.

Who is included?
Who is excluded?
Who feels uncomfortable?
Who did not get equal representation in the collective emotion?

Every spontaneous expression of solidarity must be paused, examined, and possibly condemned. Preferably by a panel.

The basic assumption behind Israeli togetherness – that there is something shared before the debate begins – is deeply offensive to a mindset that believes everything must first be deconstructed.

Togetherness that comes before theory is unacceptable.
Togetherness that does not ask permission is suspicious.

How You Break Unity Without Saying You Are Breaking It

Nobody says, “Let’s dismantle society.”
That would look bad on social media.

Instead, the process is subtle:

Every moment of unity becomes morally problematic.
Every shared symbol becomes exclusionary.
Every collective instinct becomes oppressive.
Every national reflex becomes “violence in disguise”.

You do not smash togetherness with a hammer.
You dissolve it slowly with academic acid.

And while you are at it, you explain that the real problem is not fragmentation – it is people who still feel connected too easily.

The Obsession with Being “Right”

Israeli togetherness is not always “correct”.
It does not check every moral box.
It often ignores nuance.

That is precisely the issue.

The Left is less interested in what works than in what sounds right. And if something works without proper theoretical justification, it must be fixed – or at least publicly shamed.

Togetherness, from this perspective, is too instinctive. Too tribal. Too unfiltered. Not enough footnotes.

Why This Strategy Sometimes Works

Because people are tired.

And tired societies are easier to convince that something warm and familiar is actually dangerous. Slowly, Israelis are trained to apologize for feeling united. To explain their instincts. To add disclaimers to their loyalty.

Eventually, unity becomes conditional.
And conditional unity is not unity at all – it is paperwork.

And Yet – It Refuses to Die

Because when the siren sounds, nobody asks for political credentials.
When the rockets fall, nobody requests ideological clarification.
When the country is under threat, no one pauses for a sensitivity review.

Israeli togetherness does not disappear.
It simply goes underground.

The Left can keep analyzing it, deconstructing it, and explaining why it is insufficiently enlightened – but when reality hits, the instinct always comes back.

Messy.
Unapologetic.
Effective.

And that, more than anything else, is what truly scares them.
