What Are They Really Selling Us as “Free Speech” and Why Is It Only Free If You Say the Right Things?

When you’re allowed to shout “Occupation!” in the town square,
but forbidden to tweet “Am Yisrael Chai.”

Free speech.
That sacred right which, precisely because it matters so much, has been turned into a product.

Not just any product –
a boutique product.

In Israel 2025, you enjoy absolute freedom of expression.
As long as you express exactly what the system wants to hear.

So what are you allowed to say? Well… it depends where you’re sitting

If you’re sitting in the studio of the public broadcaster,
you may call the Prime Minister an “inciter,”
settlers a “mob,”
and IDF soldiers “ethnic cleansers.”

But if you’re sitting in a hesder yeshiva
and dare to suggest that maybe – just maybe – a Supreme Court justice is a bit disconnected from the public?

Congratulations.
Welcome to Twitter’s watchlist,
or the Knesset Ethics Committee.

Freedom of speech is for everyone – but mostly for a very specific group

Ask yourselves:

When was the last time a left-wing lecturer had their talk canceled at a university?
And when was the last time a right-wing student was told to “avoid expressing extremist opinions in class”?

(Hint: last Tuesday.)

If you belong to the correct camp, every statement you make is “constructive criticism.”
If you don’t?
It’s “dangerous incitement,” “fake news,” or “religious extremism.”

On social media, every tweet is reviewed with seven pairs of eyes – all owned by the same person

You write:
“We should stop protests against soldiers during wartime.”
→ 24-hour suspension.

You write:
“IDF soldiers murder children in Gaza!”
→ Congratulations! You’ve won the “Moral Influencer Award”
and possibly a guest column in The Guardian.

There is freedom of speech –
but the algorithm knows exactly when to turn it off.

The new vocabulary of discourse: “Incitement,” “Shaming,” “Micro-violence”

Once upon a time, people were allowed to argue.

Today, every disagreement is “verbal assault.”
Especially if someone on the other side feels offended –
whether by a sentence, a tweet, or a parody.

Did someone cry?
You’re violent.

But if you scream at a schoolchild for saying “Judea and Samaria” instead of “the West Bank”?
That’s “education for complex thinking.”

And why does this serve the system so well?

Because when only one truth is permitted,
there is no real debate.חופש הדיבור

And when every alternative view is silenced,
democracy itself becomes just another pretty word.

True freedom of speech is measured precisely by the ability to hear what you don’t like.

But when every comedian, columnist, and civics teacher says the exact same thing –
you’re not living in freedom.

You’re living inside a coordinated briefing.

The Right-Wing Conclusion: Don’t give up your freedom – even if it’s unpopular

Say what you think –
but understand there will be a price.

Support creators, journalists, and lecturers who aren’t afraid.
And remember:

If you need permission to say your opinion,
it’s no longer freedom.

It’s a license.
