What Are They Selling Us in Academia?

How a PhD Became a Sophisticated Opinion Wrapped in a Lab Coat

When you have a doctorate – but common sense is considered a micro-aggression.

Once upon a time, back when we were well-behaved children of the 1990s, the word “professor” meant something.

It stood for wisdom.
Integrity.
Authority.

When a professor spoke – you listened.
He knew more.
He researched more.
He worked his way to the top.

Today?

You read an article by a PhD in the humanities explaining that the word “mother” is a patriarchal Western structure of oppression – and you can’t help but ask:

Really?
This is what received public funding?

What happened to the university?

From Free Thought to Advanced Theology

Academia was supposed to be a space for intellectual freedom.
Debate.
Pluralism.
Objective truth uncovered through research.

In practice?

The university has become a faculty of advanced theology
just with new gods:

Postmodernism.
Gender identity.
Decolonization.
Lived experience.

Same faith.
New rituals.

Want a Degree in Social Sciences? Bring Your Manifesto

Want to research the impact of religion on psychological resilience?
Better not. Religion is “problematic.”

Want to examine anti-Israel rhetoric within academia itself?
There’s no such thing as anti-Israel bias – it’s just “criticism.”

Interested in the link between Zionism and economic development in Israel’s periphery?
Careful, buddy – that sounds like a Yesha Council thesis.

But if you propose a study on queer Palestinian experiences in multicultural artistic spaces
congratulations.
The scholarship is on its way.
Bonus points if Haaretz calls.

Academic Conference – or Protest With a PowerPoint?

Today’s academic conferences are no longer arenas for debate.
They are spaces for recitation.

“The Occupation Regime and Structures of Oppression in the Palestinian Space” – mandatory panel.

“Religious Zionism and Colonial Consciousness” – prestigious seminar.

“Mizrahi Jewish History as an Ashkenazi Exclusion Mechanism” – required for your master’s.

But a conference on Jewish social contract theory, the Declaration of Independence, or the success of agricultural settlement in the Negev?

That already sounds “uncritical.”
Which is academic code for unwelcome.

Who Is a Legitimate Scholar? Whoever Fits the Line

A lecturer who openly expresses right-wing views?
At best, he’ll end up teaching evening courses somewhere over the Green Line.

But a lecturer who calls for boycotting the country he lives in,
claims the IDF carries out ethnic cleansing,
and self-identifies as a “post-Zionist, neo-Semitic, Middle Eastern intellectual”?

A trailblazer.
Next stop: the committee defining the core curriculum.

The Right-Wing Conclusion: Degrees Matter – Independent Thinking Matters More

Don’t be too impressed by the “Dr.” before a name.

Always ask:
What was studied?
Who funded it?
And which perspectives were never examined?

Remember: even science has bias –
especially when it’s placed in the service of an agenda.

And most importantly:

An academy without real pluralism is not a temple of knowledge.
It’s a temple of a sect.

So What Should Be Done?

Support academic institutions that genuinely promote freedom of thought.

Build independent research platforms – not dependent on the rector’s goodwill.

Send your children to university with an open mind –
but also with a spine.
